The Old Pueblo: Tucson Arizona
Tucson is a fast growing city known for its cosmopolitan sophistication and blend of diverse cultures. El Tiradito or The Wishing Shrine has its roots back in the 1800s. For years, folks have come here to say a little prayer, light a candle, and leave a milagro. Supposedly, if your candle is still burning in the morning, whatever you prayed for will come to pass.
Mission San Xavier del Bac serves as the parish church for the Tohono O’odham tribe and often hosts concerts. The elaborate interior has been carefully restored and numerous native artifacts are housed inside, including books, maps and photos.
Tubac lying 50 miles south of Tucson has the Tubac Presidio State Historic Park, which dates back to 1752 and houses some wonderful historical and archaeological exhibits, the Anza Trail, and the Tumacacori National Historic Park. There are numerous art and craft galleries, charming boutiques and eclectic shops offering everything from handmade beads and furniture to Native American pottery and contemporary art glass.
Tombstone located about 70 miles southeast of Tucson is where the greatest legends of the west were born, Doc Holliday, Wyatt Earp, and the gunfight at the OK Corral. Gunfight shows, monuments, a city park, a couple of intriguing museums, and various historic buildings comprise the sites.
DeGrazia’s Gallery in the Sun serves as a museum to the famed artist.
St. Augustine Cathedral is perhaps best known for its detailed cast stone façade, liberally decorated with signs and symbols, including some of desert plants and animals and includes the crucifix in the vestibule, which was carved in Pamplona, Spain in the 12th or 13th century.
St. Philip’s in the Hills is one of the largest Episcopal churches in the country also one of the most beautiful, designed in the 1930s by noted architect Josias Joesler, who wisely positioned the building to take full advantage of the majesty of the Catalina Mountains.
Biosphere 2 is a self-contained, man-made habitat that comprises all of the elements from Earth (Biosphere 1). It is a sealed glass and space frame construction with seven wilderness ecosystems.
